Now remodelers can use gas heater rated fireplaces from one room to help heat an addition without installing a second fireplace. New regulations allow remodelers to add ductwork into a direct-vent fireplace system to channel heat from the fireplace to other rooms up to 20 ft. away.

These systems can be connected to a home's thermostat and become a part of the central heating system, for cost savings. "It's important to keep in perspective that these appliances are heaters, too," says Michael Van Buren, technical director of the Hearth Products Association.
