Tiles contain chemical that naturally breaks down nitrogen oxide

Environmentally conscious home buyers in California now have the option of using a roof that actually helps clean the air, The Press Enterprise reported.
KB Homes, in conjunction with Boral Roofing, are offering the “smog-eating tile” in housing developments in Southern California. It comes standard in some communities, but in the majority it will cost about $800 for the upgrade.
Titanium dioxide in the tile breaks down nitrogen oxides in the air into oxygen and nitrates. The reaction naturally takes place in the presence of sunlight.
According to the manufacturer, the roof on a standard 2,000-square-foot house can annually break down the same amount of nitrogen oxides as a car produces during 10,800 miles of driving.
