Outdoor lighting adds ambience and a sense of security to a home. You can highlight trees, architectural features, or special plantings. When lighting trees, make sure you direct light at the tree from at least three directions so that the tree looks multi-dimensional. Try in-ground fixtures for trees located in the middle of a lawn so that the light source is tucked out of sight.
Line the walkway to your front door with path lights which express your personality or preview the interior of the home. Path lights come in a variety of styles from sleek brass models to the more whimsical. Because path lights are low voltage, they are safe for use around pets and small children. In addition, path lights are energy-efficient and you can install timers which will switch on or off your lights automatically.
You can also emphasize different textures in your front yard, whether it’s the brick of the house or the leaves of a specific plant. Installing spotlights that are directed from the side, above, or below an object can create interesting shadows and transparencies that engage the eye.
It may take a little experimentation to settle on the ideal placement and brightness of your outdoor lights but the investment will be well worth it. Your visitors will enjoy the welcoming nighttime atmosphere.
