I must say, I'm usually a cynic when it comes to building product manufacturers touting their "green initiatives," but I applaud
Georgia-Pacific for taking a leadership role in resource conservation today. G-P announced that it has joined the
SmartWay Transport Partnership, a collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce air pollution. The concept is an initiative to improve freight operations, and now G-P has joined more than 450 other companies who will contribute to the partnership’s goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 33 million to 66 million metric tons and nitrogen oxide by up to 200,000 tons annually by 2012. SmartWay was launched in 2004 and brings together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and professional associations to "pursue mutually beneficial efficiencies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies."
