February 16, 2008 -- I bumped into Tim Shigley of Shigley Construction in Wichita, Kansas while walking the IBS show floor here in Orlando, and he brought up something I thought worth sharing. Shigley is a highly successful remodeling contractor but apparently an even better entrepreneur. While brainstorming ways he might be able to create additional revenue, he did some out-of-the-box thinking that has led to a lucrative partnership with other small businessmen in his area. Shigley’s local networking led him to form a partnership through an LLC that purchased a property that he renovated and turned into a strip mall. This separate business gave Shigley a way to grow his revenue, albeit legally separate from Shigley Construction. This example points out the fact that a savvy remodeling contractor should think of himself as a local entrepreneur and not just a remodeling contractor. Look for ways you can diversify your business, and you, like Shigley, might just find that a partnership such as this is a good idea for you and your company.
