Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

Jay Sweet
As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

Alternate Influentials #3-Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak

Just to recap: This week I'm posting the "Alternate Influentials," an add-on to our February cover story. (Read my first blog about it here. Read about the first Alternate here and the second here.)

Personal computers have changed everything we do, including the remodeling industry, in countless ways. I'd make an argument that it's one of the biggest reasons remodeling is what it is today. It's made it easier for remodelers to track their finances, leads and marketing efforts. Without a personal computer in almost every home, the Internet doesn't matter. And the Internet may be the only thing that has changed the industry more than the computer. (If there was one guy  who invented the Internet, he'd have made the list.)

Jobs and Wozniak may not have invented the PC -- that was a group of engineers at Xerox -- but they were the first ones to widely market a home computer with the introduction of the Apple II in 1977.

Why they didn't make the list: Maybe it's because I grew up with an Apple IIc in the house, but I seemed to be the only one who thought they belonged in the top 10. If this was a 20 Most Influential list they probably would have made it.
