Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

Just wanted to give a shout-out to sunroom remodeler and manufacturer Patio Enclosures, who I wrote about last year in one of our Corner Office articles. The company recently an award for celebrating it's second consecutive year without an injury at its manufacturing facility.

When I talked to CEO Kenneth Sekley, one of the things he was proudest of was the company's safety record. Although I didn't include it in the article for space reasons, here's some of what he had to say then:

One of my top areas of pride, probably the most important thing we've done here, is our improvement in safety. We've gone 15 months [at that point] without an accident. Previously, there were years we'd have 20 to 30 in a year.

The company achieved this great turnaround by repeatedly reinforcing the importance of safety with its employee-owners (the company is 100 percent employee-owned) and applying the lessons learned from previous accidents in training. The changes have helped the company create a better working environment, as well as reduce costs for workers comp and health care.
