Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

Jay Sweet
As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

Why Gen X and the echoes can't keep up

Earlier this month I wrote in the magazine (online here and here) about the differences we're going to see in this industry as the Xers and echo boomers become the primary movers of remodeling. One of the major challenges is going to be that we simply, as a group, probably won't have the kind of wealth our parents did.

Along those lines, Salon.com recently had an interesting interview with Nan Mooney, author of "Not Keeping Up With our Parents: The Decline of the Professional Middle Class." I also talked about this idea in a recent blog post

For an alternate view, read Robert Samuelson's article in Newsweek that argues the problem is we expect more out of being "middle class" now, like flat screens and other gadgets.
