As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

Wind power pays for itself ... maybe

Here's a new study (PDF) from GE Financial Services that says the tax revenue from wind-generated energy exceeds the tax credits that producers receive from the government. That's a great argument in favor of the federal government's Production Tax Credit, which is set to expire at the end of the year.

One caveat, though, that doesn't find it's way into the report: GE is one of the leading makers of electricity-generating wind turbines. I'm not suggesting there is anything untoward going on here, but it's worth noting.

Regardless, we need to be looking at alternative ways to meet our energy needs (as well as reducing usage, of course), so anything that helps move that conversation forward -- and helps get the PTC renewed -- is good news.

After all, the best way to make businesses move green is to provide a financial incentive. Most companies are like Wal-Mart, who this week announced they will be sourcing more local fruits and vegetables in order to offset transportation costs. While people have been after the company to do that for years for environmental and other reasons, it wasn't until it made economic sense that it happened.
