Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

Jay Sweet
As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

Why they're Innovators, Part Three

This week I'm blogging about our Innovators. You can read Part One here, Part Two here and the January cover story that inspired the series here.

Today I'm writing about Matt Plaskoff, president and founder of One Week Bath (and Plaskoff Construction.)

What intrigued us about One Week Bath was the promise of a quick, complete bathroom remodel. Not just a tub liner, but a complete overhaul in five days. It's a mark that the company hits 96 percent of the time. When they fall short, it's usually because something has gotten broken on the job and a replacement can't be acquired quickly enough.

At the same time, Plaskoff has kept the focus on quality, recognizing that getting it done quickly means nothing if the jobs are falling apart after his crew leaves. It seems to be working. Despite installing more than 100 bathrooms last year, the company only has one complaint on file with the Better Business Bureau and a AAA rating from the organization.

Plaskoff says this ideas has really caught on because people can't -- or don't want to -- wait through the typical remodeling process. His clients are typically busy, two-income families in a 1,500 to 3,000 sq. ft. house. They are risk-adverse individuals who don't like the idea of committing the next several weeks of their lives to a project, but can handle the idea of a one-week process.

With all the horror stories people here about remodeling, they want remodelers in and out of their homes as quickly as possible, so this has a real attraction for many. Plaskoff's plans call for expanding this model to other markets once he's gotten it perfected, so expect to see more of One Week Bath in the future.
