Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

Jay Sweet
As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

The flaws of Energy Star

Energy Star is the most popular and easiest "green" program for remodelers to use and the most recognized by the average consumer. According to our recent green study (full results appearing in the October issue), 64 percent of remodelers describe it as easy to use and an equal number describe it as reliable, topping both categories amongst the various programs. It also easily came in as the most-used program in last year's survey, some 35 points ahead of the No. 2 program (NAHB).

Consumer Reports is up this month with their look at the program, pointing out its many flaws and how companies take advantage of various loopholes to improve their supposed energy efficiency. For example, energy ratings on refrigerators are taken with the icemaker shutoff. (Why? Who knows?). It makes for some interesting reading and might help you in making more informed decisions for your clients.
