Jonathan Sweet - Remodeling Notes

Jay Sweet
As senior editor of Professional Remodeler, a lot of information crosses my desk. This blog will be a chance to share some of that with you, with an immediacy not possible with a monthly magazine. It's also your chance to tell me what you think about what I have to say. Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you won't be shy.

My last few posts have had a bit of a negative feel to them (hard to avoid when you start talking about home sales), so I figured it's time for some good news.

In its latest issue Consumer Reports takes a look at remodeling and its survey of homeowners found that most were satisifed with their experience. The magazine divided contractors into five groups: independent contractors and those recommended or employed by a local store, a manufacturer, Home Depot or Lowe's. Independent contractors, local stores and manufacturers all scored an 86 or 87 out of 100 (where 80 means "very satisfied," according to CR). Those from Home Depot (77) and Lowe's (76) scored lower. Consumers also reported that contractors from Home Depot and Lowe's were less likely to resolve the problems they caused.

The magazine also rated several product categories on their performance, including countertops, flooring, appliances and sinks and faucets. For more information, visit www.consumerreports.org.
