Bridging the Contractor/Designer Divide

February 1, 2001
Professional Remodeler

Communication between contractors and designers is critical to keeping a job on schedule. Here’s how to open the lines of communication:

  • Contractors should inform designers of any technical problems that might increase price as soon as orders are placed.
  • Designers should clearly spell out three or four options to allow for product variation.
  • Have each party define all technical terminology in writing, to avoid confusion.
  • Review mock-ups and drawdowns together, so designers and contractors are on the same page.
  • Schedule work on the jobsite carefully, and be prepared for cost increases when schedules stack.
  • Take an interest in each other’s disciplines.
  • Show respect for one another’s unique skills and talents
  • Share information freely.
