Most remodelers are aware that the drywall they use in their projects is manufactured from recycled materials. Georgia-Pacific, one of the country’s largest drywall manufacturers, not only uses recycled paper fibers from newspapers and corrugated containers, but also uses synthetic gypsum made from recycled industrial waste.
But remodelers can also recycle scrap drywall during the demolition phase of a project. According to Georgia-Pacific, 400,000 tons of wallboard waste is recycled into new wallboard. Waste wallboard can also be used as an additive to agricultural soil, especially for grapes, peas, peanuts, corn and turf crops.
Most drywall manufacturers accept waste drywall at plants for reuse. Contact your local drywall supplier for more information on drywall recycling in your area.
