LP Cedar Decking
Engineered for the decking market, Evans Plus western red cedar is a superb combination of beauty and durability. One of LP Corporation's newer products will be featured in the Behind the Walls House: western red cedar decking, which will be installed on the home's second-floor porch. LP entered this premium product segment several years ago with the acquisition of Evans Forest Products. Today, LP generates more than 50 million board-feet of red cedar each year, devoting this production exclusively to outdoor deck applications. LP manufactures its red cedar products in Malakwa, British Columbia. The cedar trees from this region yield a fine-grain, virtually wane-free wood, with tight knots on the face. Thanks to its preservative oils within, cedar also naturally resists decay and insect infestation, and it is free of wood pitch and resins. For all these reasons, "red cedar is the premier wood for decking," says LP's marketing communications manager George Strakes. "It's lightweight and resilient, yet extremely firm. That makes it ideal for decks and workable with almost any type of finish."
Ideal Decking Surface
The LP cedar products line includes two other ready-to-install styles:
EvansPlus4, which also falls into the Architectural Knotty category, is virtually wane-free on all four edges. That makes it especially suitable for handrails and similar deck constructions.
Eagle Deck sits at the top end of the WRCLA Custom Knotty segment. This durable material is most appropriate for residential and commercial applications where a more economical material is needed.
“We’re strong believers in the importance of industry-based promotion of the unique qualities of western red cedar, as well as the development of stringent product-quality standards,” says Strakes, referring to the WRCLA system. “These activities have helped spur consumer awareness of and demand for red cedar That benefits not just LP, but also our distributor and builder partners.”
LP also adheres to the high standards of the American Forest & Paper Association’s Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The company owns or manages approximately 22 million acres of forests throughout North America, all certified by third-party auditors against the strict principles of SFI.
