Introduction
Future Vision

Worker Professional Remodeler's Model reMODEL series continues in 2003 with an exciting project that will transform a "smart house" from the 1950s into what promises to be a very "smart" one for the new millennium.

This sixth project in the series will focus on the complete remodeling of a classic ranch house into an aesthetically pleasing, energy-efficient home with a contemporary floor plan well-suited to the way today's family lives.

Built in 1957 as a showcase model in a new development of upscale single-family residences in Farmington, N.M., the home originally featured a host of innovative products, materials and custom design elements that made it a standout for its time. These included the latest in gas appliances; a low-voltage wiring system with two control panels to provide convenient whole-house operation of all lighting options; dramatic beamed, vaulted ceilings; three full baths; exceptionally large bedrooms; and even an in-ground sprinkler system to help maintain exterior landscaping in the high-desert location.

Roof 1 Over the years, however, a combination of homeowner neglect and the passage of time left the home in dire need of updating.

As the remodeling process progresses, the home will evolve from an understated brick ranch with a nearly flat roof to a striking courtyard estate featuring a steeply pitched roof line accented by multiple gables as well as an old-world exterior characterized by a combination of cultured stone, brick and wrought-iron details complemented by an eye-catching entry tower.

Inside, the home will feature a variety of modern amenities, including new appliances, finishes and fixtures; a high-efficiency heating and cooling system; larger closets; better use of space; and a whole lot more drama. Other additions include a separate guesthouse, a lap pool and an exercise room that will be incorporated into the home's detached garage.

Roof 2The 2,600-square-foot home's stepped footprint will remain essentially unchanged with the exception of an increase in the rear living space that will transform the original cramped, galley-style kitchen into a large meal-preparation and gathering area better suited to contemporary entertaining. The master suite will be enlarged to include a sitting area, a walk-in closet and outdoor access.
