PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify kinds of projects consumers are doing, what they are spending and their perception of the remodeling experience.

METHODOLOGY
Phase I - Screener
In January 2002, a "Multicard" screening questionnaire was conducted among a nationally representative panel of 40,000 households maintained by National Family Opinion and previously selected to conform to the latest available U.S. Census data for the nine geographical divisions; and within each division by market size, age of head of household, annual household income and household size.

This screening questionnaire identified people who reported they had completed a home remodeling project by a professional contractor in the last 12 months. It also identified people who intend to have a home remodeling project done by a professional contractor in the next 12 months.

Phase II - Follow-up Study
On April 12, 2002 a detailed questionnaire was mailed to 1,500 of these households. A total of 1,163 questionnaires were returned, and of these, 819 were from households that said they had completed or planned to complete a home remodeling project by a professional contractor, yielding a 54.6% rate of response.
