Good question. We asked around the office and didn't come up with a satisfactory answer. So we are opening the floor up to you – our audience. Does anyone know what would be a good rule of thumb as to how much of a new residential, green or second-home development's budget should be allocated to marketing? If so, let us hear from you.

Tiffany:

To answer your question, the survey was conducted via Internet. The nationwide sample included Professional Builder readers who were builders, builders-developers, general contractors, mobile/modular/sectional home manufacturers or architectural/engineering/design firms for whom email addresses were available. A supplemental sample of Green Builder readers of similar profile was also included.
Respondent profile: 668 builders/builders-developers/general contractors; 82 architectural/engineering/design firms; 20 mobile/modular/sectional home manufacturers.

Can you give any more detail on who was surveyed and how? How many builders? Was it nationwide? What kind of sampling method did you use to select respondants? The results are so interesting but I'd like to hear just a few sentences on the sample of builders you spoke to so we can know how to generalize the results.

Was use of an energy efficient, direct vent gas burning fireplace or use of an EPA certified wood burning fireplace one of the 21 green product options that could be chosen by survey participants?
If not, that was a big miss on PB's part. Both of these fireplace types would earn a builder points in either the NAHB or the LEED program. In addition, they both contribute positively to clean indoor air quality, increase the saleability of the home AND make for happy homeowners! What's not to love?!
