We purchased through resale a Mattamy built home based upon all the great things that we heard through Mattamy''s huge media-advertising campaigns. The home was approx. 5 yrs old when purchased just over one yr ago from the original owners for over 1/2 million $s. To our dismay we have found that this home has windows that allow air through them as if they are opened, even blowing candles out from the draft. Also, the master ensuite appears to have no or little insullation as both the Master Bedroom and ensuite are like walking into a refrigerator! No exageration! The powder room tiles have cracks in the grout and have started to lift. We contacted Mattamy Homes Head Office and voiced our complaints to the Appropiate person, who returned our call after a couple of days, last Summer. It was really sad to hear the person representing a Company that boasts about customer satisfaction and customer care as well as rec. the J. D. Powers award blow us off the way she did. We were told that the home was out of warranty and basically there was nothing that could be done!
The resale market is an important part of our Real Estate economy. Also, when we put $150,000 of upgrades into this house we did so only because we trusted Mattamy''s name in the Housing market.
Warranty or NO WARRANTY this Mattamy Home was not constructed properly and I suspect that out of the 30,000 families that live in Mattamy homes we are not the only ones that have experienced these types of problems.
We were told that we could have the home inspected at a cost to us of over $300.00 to determine if the house fails in the area of energy effectiveness. I believe that my simple candle extinguishing test answers that question.
What really upsets me is that homeowners in the Province of Ontario are not protected against this type of cutting corner, rip-off buiding by the builders. Have you tried to reach the people at the TOP of companies like Mattamy Homes? Good luck and when or if you ever do I can bet that you will be given the same lame excuse that the original owner should have complained and had the problem rectified. In the perfect world that would have been the solution, who know perhaps the original owners did try and nothing was done. The facts remain that a home that we paid over half a million dollars for (In Brampton),added upgrades to the tune of $150,000, should not have tiles comming off the floor and windows and rooms that make the house feel as if the windows are open. Shame on Mattamy Homes for not taking the responsiblility to correct this.
Oh and by the way, first owner or not I will not waste the money on a truck load of lemons for my front lawn. I plan to do a door to door in my community and really get some feedback on just how SATISFIED my neighbors are with their Mattamy Homes. The results will determine what my next steps will be to get someone''s attention!
I''ve considered contacting Mike Holmes of HGTV''s Holmes on Homes, but only under 1 condition
