Now is the time of year that clients start thinking about their summer plans and how they can optimize the use of their outdoor spaces. Patios and porches are becoming more than just an al fresco dining spot. Kitchen and lounging areas are being planned which have more complex decorating needs, as described in this New York Times article. Most want to extend their indoor style further and the range of outdoor rated products available has had to expand to keep up.

Tips for decorating outdoor living spaces: 

• Make a seamless transition: keep the continuity of style, color and texture seen in the home.
• Proper lighting plays a key role in expanding the usability of outdoor living spaces: outdoor barbecue lights, floor lamps, ceiling fans, step lights, and chandeliers are available in many styles.
• Keep it cozy by defining a conversation area.
• Try to transition easily from the outdoor living space to exterior landscaping and architecture by matching the style to the landscape lighting and garden accents.
• Use outdoor artwork, area rugs and fabrics that are designed for exposure.
• Use accessories similar to the inside of your home like candles and pillows.
• Try fountains and/or fire pits to add a dynamic dimension to the outside décor.
