Our LAMPS PLUS Design Consultant Lynda Gould brought in some photographs she took of a project in which she incorporated LAMPS PLUS lighting fixtures. It is always interesting to see how our products can actually be implemented in homes. This instance perfectly illustrates how a row of mini pendant lights can be used with great effect to illuminate the kitchen counter.

Pendant lighting in the kitchen is a relatively recent trend. As in this example, the pendants are often used in addition to recessed and under cabinet lighting to add character and ambience to the kitchen. The recent trend toward open floor plans has also pushed the mini pendant into prominence since they leave more open space than the traditional island fixtures.

Lynda’s tips for using mini-pendants in the kitchen include:
1. Add a dimmer switch to increase the versatility of the pendant lights. Then they can provide either task or mood lighting.
2. Take the height of the inhabitants in your household into account when deciding on the hanging height of the pendants. If they are hung too high then you may see a glare from the bulb.
3. Center the fixtures over the counter.
4. Try to find a fixture that can complement the finishes of your faucets, countertops, and cabinets. Pendant lights can tie everything together if chosen carefully.
