Yes, the market has been down and hasn’t bottomed out yet but the supply chain players are ready to sit down and look at news ways in which to provide value to their customers. The obvious is price-related but I have hear of other concepts such as price protection, increased terms, enhanced delivery and storage programs, increased rebates and allowances as well as enhanced training programs. I talked with one manufacturer at IBS that is offering a unique pricing program that holds the price on upgraded products while raising the price on the standard, everyday grade of product.
My purpose in writing about this subject is that I truly believe the “The timing is right” for builders, distributors and manufacturers to come together in open and honest communication and to put together creative solutions to each other’s problems.

Glenn,
I think your analysis is spot on, the timing IS crucial if we in the trade industry are going to ride out this most resent economical slowdown.
In fact I'm betting the "Farm" on this being the case. I have been a Licensed Contractor for 4 years, in construction for 11 years before that, and last year I decided it was TIME to act.
For me, I decided that the best thing I could do for my self and Family was to start a Website that is unlike 99% of all other Improvement sites on the web today. Not only does this new site FOCUS more evenly on Residential AND Commercial markets, but we are going to implement 3 new search tools not found in any other site. (Hundreds of hours online categorizing over 400 NATIONAL Contractor search sites not including the thousands of local dedicated services)
I'm leaving my very lucrative construction career so that I can oversee the launch of this website that caters to "homeowners, property managers, contractors,Architects,Designers and vendors alike" over 60 TRADES and their Specialty sub-Categories.
We are betting that the short term (the next 2 years) there will be a BOOM of Contractors desperately seeking alternative ways to promote their SERVICES, more and more the web is providing means to this end.
Our site launches on March 13th 2008. And we start Advertising on the TOP local Talk Radio station in the following month of April. We are seeking Material Suppliers Nationwide who would like to post their services on our site, if you would like to learn more About this site (including the Name) please E-mail me directly at Georgecedeno@att.net,
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW.
Best Regards,
GEORGE CEDENO
