Glenn Singer - Supply Chain Connections

Glen Singer
This blog will discuss how builders and manufactures can derive mutual benefits from forging in-depth relationships and by developing a continued dialogue on issues and opportunities facing both. It will identify the “gaps” that exist today between the two entities and explore how to close these gaps in such a way that each will benefit. It will also expose “real life” builder and manufacturer relationship successes as well as failures.

What Lurks Around the Corner?

In my October 9, 2007, blog ("Business As Usual") I talked about some potential big changes that will occur in the supply chain. In fact, here is a quote from that article. “I don’t know who it will be, but some force(s) will make some big changes in the way materials are brought to market.” This week I want to elaborate a little more about this concept.

While I don’t know who specifically will make these changes, I will speculate on which elements of the supply chain will step up in this area. In my opinion it will be some national home builders and some large, national suppliers. I realize that it has been some time since we have read about Centex and Lennar getting involved in changing the supply chain so many of us might think that they have abandoned these strategies. But I think they have just shifted priorities trying to adjust to the market changes of the last year. I believe that these two national builders and others will step up when the time is right to implement some powerful changes in the supply chain.

Let’s not forget some of the large national suppliers like Guardian, Blue Linx and Stock as they have the resources and presence to change the chain in some big ways as well. No, I don’t have any inside information about these companies, it just makes sense that big changes in the supply chain will come from big players. Time will tell.
