Doverra has created an innovative hybrid of fiberglass-reinforced cement (currently awaiting a U.S. patent) for fireplace mantels and surrounds. The company plans to use the material, also called Doverra, for other products in the future, including countertops, floor and wall tiles, integrated sinks and exterior pavers, says Bill Goddu, Doverra’s vice president of design and product development.
Doverra resembles natural stone but weighs less than typical stone facing materials. Cast face down as a monolithic piece, each mantel is a self-supporting, hollow structure. Goddu says one model, the Clybourn mantel shelf, at 72 inches wide, 6 inches high and 8 inches deep, weighs 160 to 170 pounds and installs with standard carpentry tools and skill sets.
Available in white, limestone, natural gray, charcoal and sage, the mantels and mantel shelves come pre-sealed. A complete Clybourn system, including mantel, hearth and surround kit, costs $3,247. For more information, go to www.doverra.com.
