Good Paint Makes Better Profits

September 1, 2002
Professional Builder

The Rohm and Haas Paint Quality Institute (www.paintquality.com) promotes quality paint as a proven, profitable new home upgrade, citing “great potential for high margins, low business acquisition cost and steady repeat sales” among the most attractive benefits of a paint upgrade program.

Why paint? “In new residential construction, builders have a tendency to not pay attention to paint quality because they’re too preoccupied with price,” says John Stauffer, technical director of the PQI. “It looks good when it’s finished, but lower-quality paint is more susceptible to dirt, harder to clean, and doesn’t withstand time and elements as well.”

How much can you make? Painting contractors and builders who’ve formed alliances say customers are willing to pay $3,000 to $10,000 for quality paint upgrades be-cause they represent a re-turn on investment. The PQI says builders can create $100,000-plus in paint upgrade revenue annually.
