Anti-Mold HVAC Product On The Horizon

June 1, 2002
Professional Builder

A steel manufacturer is in the early stages of coming to market with a coating for HVAC ductwork that kills mold and bacteria before they cause problems for homeowners.

AK Steel of Middletown, Ohio, is applying the silver-ion coating AgION, made by AgION Technologies LLC in Wakefield, Mass. The ions make treated surfaces virtually free of microbes, AK says.

The steel company is working with two ductwork fabricators, McGill AirFlow and Seal-Tite, to bring the anti-microbial steel to market, says AK spokesman Chris Kempner. More relationships likely will be announced soon.

Residential uses of the coated steel also include handrails, steel-framing members, doorknobs, faucets and food-preparation surfaces.
