"Today’s clients want the character and warm feel of older design with the convenience of modern technology," says Carl Best, remodeling director for Orren Pickell Designers & Builders, Bannockburn, Ill. To demonstrate this blend of past and future, Orren Pickell has created The Turn of the Century House, a $1.2-million renovation of a 1918 home located in Kenilworth, Ill. The remodeler selected the house because of its structure, according to Best. "It has great bones," he says
To maintain the integrity of the home, the company will carefully restore the rich mahogany wood work, and rooms added to the house, such as a great room and a master bedroom, are designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of the structure. The company plans to include high-tech theater [1] packages hidden in built-ins, install security systems [1], and update storage. When it debuts early this year, the Turn of the Century House will measure 4,943 square feet and carry a price tag of $2.99 million.
