The amount of money and time wasted in oversized and unnecessary headers, overbuilt corners, and excess kings, jacks, and cripples is a national epidemic, often adding up to more than $500 per unit ($1,000 is not unusual). In areas where roofs are stick-built, double the numbers. It may be a challenge to get your framer to change and your local inspector to follow the state code, but the stakes are too high to not make a dedicated effort here. We have yet to find a builder that seriously tackles this issue and finds anything less than substantial return.
