Abersham Commercial Services LLC, manufacturers of the "All Composite" Ambiente Housing System braved temperatures as low as -51F to build their first Canadian home in early December. The challenges of this extreme weather did not stop the team from completing the 1000 square foot home in under a week.
"We do not pretend it was easy," explains co-inventor Simon Parrish. The onsite cranes constantly would freeze, jointing materials would literally go from +70F to a frozen solid in seconds, but we persevered and conquered.
The build was also the first Ambiente Home build for local distributor Storm Builders of Winnipeg Manitoba. Derek Cook, a former First Nations Chief and owner of Storm builders, has long searched for a performance housing solution to solve dire housing conditions in the Northern territories. The Ambiente system is a long term solution to traditional stick build which in some cases does not survive longer than five years. Mold and fire being just a couple of the many issues solved by an all composite housing system.
The short build time and low onsite cost of the Ambiente Housing System has made the economics of using composites as a raw material to compete along side lumber and Gypsum feasible. The use of composites has allowed the Abersham team to produce a product that resists hurricane force winds, is unaffected by flooding, does not promote mold growth, is virtually maintenance free and because of these remarkable performances is now insurable with low premiums. A long running ,thermal test program by the University Of Manitoba has collaborated incredible energy efficiency results demonstrating a 30 percent to 40 percent reduction in heating costs compared to traditional housing.
Incorporating several automated processes like Pultrusion,RTM and Continuous flat sheet manufacture, Abersham has developed a production facility that can produce in volume and looks to be a formidable alternative to traditional construction materials. With an aggressive expansion plan that could see as many as 10 manufacturing facilities online in the next three years, the Ambiente Housing System is sure to propell composites into mainstream construction.
