Building Green in a Black and White World--Chapter 2
The following is an exerpt from the book Building Green in a Black and White World.
Section 1; Chapter 2; Part 1; Chapter Two Introduction
Introduction

What is Green Building? There are as many ways to build green as there are builders in this country. There are also many "shades" of green. The darker green it is, the more environmentally friendly or sustainable the house is.

"What’s the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?"
--Henry David Thoreau, 1845
This chapter discusses the environmental aspects of conventional construction and how green substitutions can reduce some of the impacts traditionally associated with building new buildings. However, these technical considerations are for your eyes primarily. The information in this chapter can help you in your decision-making process on how to start building green. Your customers want to hear a different story. How to sell what you have built will be discussed in Chapters 5 and 6.
