I'm looking at a two story townhouse with walkout basement of block. Each floor has approx. 1600 sq. ft. of space. What surprised me was that the main floor and second floor at the back of the home was cantilevered out about 18 inches from the basement walls. The cantilever joists supporting the weight were 2x12's.

Is this appropriate construction? It seems like there's too much weight to be supported by just 2x12's. When you're in the back of the main floor you can see a noticable "dip" in the floor from side to side in the area of the patio door.

What can be done to enhance the support?

This article was very helpful so I may understand how to frame the 8x10 floor of an 8x8 hen house that I am planning to build. As a beginner and having never built anything on this level, I found this article very useful. Thanks.
