EmailWheaton home first in Illinois to get Emerald certification
The first Emerald-status home in Illinois, and one of only 21 nationwide, has been built in Wheaton. JAW Builders created the 3,600-square-foot, single family home, which has five bedrooms, four baths and a basement.
The home features several green components, including geothermal heating and cooling, an efficient HVAC system, recycled wood substrate siding, bamboo flooring and energy-efficient windows.
In order to qualify for Emerald status, a new home must be at least 60 percent more efficient than a home built according to 2006 International Energy Conservation Code/Energy Star standards. It also must be independently inspected and certified, and earn at least 697 points in six different categories. The Wheaton residence is expected to earn more than 800 points.
