Living Building Challenge comes to Alaska

The Cascadia Green Building Council and the Aleutian Housing Authority (AHA) have commenced the Living Aleutian Home Design Competition to design a new, energy-efficient home for an Atka, Alaska man. The competition follows the principles of the Living Building Challenge 2.0, which encourages builders to create today’s greenest homes.

More than 180 teams have submitted designs for a new home for Jimmy Prokopeuff, a 32-year-old Atka native. According to competition rules, all designs must be for a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home with 1,150 to 1,350 square feet of living space; construction budgets cannot exceed $400,000.

By the end of the competition, AHA hopes to have a design that can be replicated across all of the villages in its jurisdiction. The ultimate goal is to reduce consumption of fossil fuels, which are more expensive in Atka than in many other areas due to the need to have them shipped in.

The first prize submission will have the option to work with AHA to bring the design to completion and receive a $35,000 cash prize. The second-place winning entry will receive a $15,000 prize. Winners will be announced at Living Future 2012, Cascadia Green Building Council’s annual conference, May 2-4, 2012, in Portland, Ore.
