The EPA releases new guidelines that step up the Energy Star status quo.
A number of large and small home builders have signed on to implement the Environmental Protection Agency's newest Energy Star guidelines for homes. The program kicks off this year.
Under the plans, homes must be at least 15 percent more energy efficient than those built under the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. The homes likely will be 30 percent or more energy efficient than homes built without the standard.
Meritage, Ashton Woods, Beazer Homes, M/I Homes KB Homes, and NVR have all agreed to go along with the new guidelines, along with nearly 400 other builders.
