Lots of good ideas, but there's a major hole: There's no mention of a public relations department or agency.
If you're thinking of public relations as the guy at the ad agency who gets you a story in the Sunday real estate section, forget that. He's an ad guy.
Public relations is a strategic business function that manages your reputation by establishing two-way communications with any group of people that has an impact on your company's growth and survival.
If disaster strikes, your PR team should be among the first contacted. If the news media is saying the flood wiped out your entire town, people will assume you're closed, if not out of business. Even if you do all the good things described in the article, your PR team will need to be in touch with your key constituencies to let them know what you are doing. That includes employees, customers, government officials and, if appropriate, investors. Your public relations team will have in place a crisis plan that they will put into effect as soon as crisis strikes.
To a PR practitioner, crisis means anything that can impact your reputation: natural disasters like weather, fires, blizzards...or man-made disasters like accidents, criminal or civil complaints, political situations or just angry homeowners talking to reporters.
Every builder should have a public relations team. Team members should be leaders in the discussion about disaster planning. As it is with the IT work described here, most of the public relations work needed to handle a crisis or a disaster must be completed before the problem exists.
More information about crisis preparation and communications is available at www.prsa.org, among other places.

Great article and resources. Quality Built clients have always enjoyed our ISO 9001 compliant digital archiving process called DAP(R), which provides them with an online data storage tool to upload all project information for free. Newer insurance programs are going to be offering incentives and discounts to builders who are fully prepared for any disaster, including litigation. It costs little or nothing to be prepared!
