Zero-Energy Homes is Latest Option

San Francisco Bay area's Ponderosa Homes showcases its Zero-Energy home - one of the home builder's newest options — at The Classics at Ironwood in Pleasanton, Calif., through an inviting "Green Gallery." The gallery, located in the garage of a Zero-Energy model home, features comfortable seating, Zen-like décor, and four main exhibits: Energy Efficiency, Natural Resources, Water Wise, and Air Quality. Visitors read about the environmentally-friendly products used in the model, such as formaldehyde-free materials, bamboo flooring, roof-integrated solar systems, and low-E windows.

Cindy Douglas, vice president of sales and marketing for Ponderosa Homes, says her company worked with the county of Alameda to design a home that generates as much energy as it consumes annually. Ponderosa estimates that an owner can expect to save 60% in monthly energy costs with a Zero-Energy home. "It's a step on the road to energy independence," explains Douglas.

Models opened in September and by the end of October, the second phase of the community sold out. Prices for the Classics at Ironwood are priced in the $800,000s to $900,000's and range from 2,100 to 3,000 square feet.
