Men Speak Up

In the past, women were the primary decision-makers in home decorating. However, a recent study for Expo Design Center reveals that men are taking a much more active role in picking colors, styles and products during remodeling. The study, conducted by Harris Interactive/Yankelovich Partners, reported that 71% of couples disagree about some aspect of decorating, especially color (31%), style (25%) and quality (15%).

Other key findings include:

Two-thirds of women say the opinions of their significant others influence their decisions to purchase a decorative item.

Men prefer exterior home-renovation projects, such as landscaping, outdoor lighting and grilling systems, to indoor improvements. Renovation of the kitchen was their second priority, but it ranked No. 1 with women.

In kitchen remodels, women are more interested in style and a floor plan set up for ease of use, while men are concerned about the functionality of the appliances.

Women prefer an informal style, while men lean more toward contemporary colors and designs.
