Off the Floor

Using floor tile in non-conventional areas can spruce up both your design innovations and your profit margins. Using matching floor tile for countertops, backsplashes and wall accents brings a unique feeling to a kitchen, foyer or bath.

"People are asking for unique tiles," says Kirk Morris, president of Morris Builders. "With the mosaic tiles coming out and the deco tiles available, you can make good money by adding murals to kitchens, for example, behind the stove. It really gives remodelers a chance to ‘bell and whistle’ our projects."

Using decorative tiles to clearly demarcate stairs or to differentiate rooms from each other is another trick that can easily add some innovation to a remodel. Custom "area rugs" of tile in a living room or dining room can be a detail that makes your design stand out from the rest.

"There’s a perceptual value [with tile]," says Morris. "Homeowners think it sets their house apart...and they’re willing to pay for it."
