Design Awards: Gold Finished Basement - CBi Design Professionals/Thomas Sebold & Associates

Finished Basement
Franklin, Mich.
Designer: CBi Design Professionals, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Remodeler: Thomas Sebold & Associates, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

This basement remodel was the most recent part of a series of renovations and additions CBi Design Professionals and Thomas Sebold & Associates had performed on this home.

The companies won another Gold Award for a bathroom in the home and a Silver Award for the whole house.

The existing basement was a typical finished lower level, with a poor layout built around mechanicals, beams and columns, with bad lighting to boot. The homeowners wanted a more usable space not only for daily use by their five children, but also to be used frequently for charity and corporate events.

The CBi and Sebold team gutted the entire space, removing, relocating and reinforcing the steel columns and steel beams to improve the layout. New lighting helps the space feel like an above-ground living area.

The new basement includes a theater room, sundae bar/kitchen, billiard/ping pong area and a central padded gym/activity area. A local graffiti artist was brought in to paint the walls in this central space under the direction of the five children. This area also has removable walls that allows the owners to have large-scale events of 50 to 100 people.

The judges felt the design and construction team clearly met the homeowners’ goals: “Well designed, (with) excellent craftsmanship and great detail. Each space flows well one to the next,” they said.
