Design Awards: Gold Exterior - Wentworth Inc.

Wentworth Inc., Chevy Chase, Md.
The owners of this home in the Washington, D.C., suburbs were looking to update the exterior of their dated 1960s split-foyer to reflect a more modern façade.
They not only wanted to drastically improve their curb appeal, but also to better the home’s functionality by replacing a single-car carport with a new two-car garage and adding a covered front porch.
The design team at Wentworth Inc. envisioned the new garage as a “third block” added to the existing structure’s two existing “blocks” — the two-story bedroom wing on the right and the one-story living space next to it. The three blocks were tied together by creatively mixing and matching new and old materials.
Wentworth matched the existing brick on the front of the home on the new garage. Stone from a local quarry stretches across the front of the home and also serves the dual purpose of hiding three unattractive basement windows. Cedar boards were used on the existing two-story structure and the new garage to connect those spaces.
The judges specifically cited the good use and mix of multiple materials as a factor in the project’s Gold Award.
