10 Essentials of Residential Design

Book Review

September 30, 2002

Twenty-five years after being part of the architectural/design team that wrote the influential A Pattern Language, Max Jacobson and Murray Silverstein have collaborated with fellow architect Barbara Winslow to write Patterns of Home: The Ten Essentials of Enduring Design (The Taunton Press, 2002).

The book distills the 200-plus architectural design patterns identified in A Pattern Language into the 10 that are "essential" for residential design, including site planning, capturing natural light, achieving flow between rooms and the selection of building materials.

Patterns of Home includes tours of 33 homes, 410 color photos and 155 line drawings. It can be ordered at www.HousingZone.com/store.
