We are a design/build remodeling firm in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. I am in the process of becoming CAPS certified, and have had an interest in this topic for some time.
In my view, some concepts being tauted as part of Universal Design are not really Universal at all. Rocker light switches, to me, are a prime example. These are difficult to find by those with vision impairment. Depending on their location, the user must first step into a dark room then find the (hopefully) lighted switch before being able to use it. Those with chronic arthritis and other motion-limiting challenges are expected to make a motion similar to pressing a button.
Watch someone with impaired vision enter a room and look for a switch
