New immigrant rules pose challenges for small businesses

Small employers could be faced with a barrage of applications from immigrants who have been granted protection from deportation. Others may face difficult questions when current employees admit they previously were not authorized to work. Employers who fire such workers for lying may face discrimination suits, and those who retain the employees need to file paperwork so they don’t get in trouble for having had them on the payroll, lawyers say.
