Toll Brothers eyes NYC-area tennis stadium
Toll president visits stadium, which is accepting proposals for redevelopment
Luxury builder Toll Bros. is one of several developers looking into the redevelopment of a historic tennis stadium just outside of Manhattan, the Wall Street Journal reported on its blog.
The West Side Tennis Club’s leadership recently issued a request for proposals for the stadium that housed U.S. Open Tennis championships for decades. Monday, several would-be developers toured the site located in an upscale Queens, N.Y. neighborhood. Proposals are due in October.
A club representative declined to comment on developer’s interest.
But Toll, one of the country’s largest home builders, confirmed that division president David Von Spreckelsen attended Monday’s tour. The Horsham, Penn.-based company, which builds single-family homes and luxury condos, declined to comment further.
The 15,000-seat facility housed hasn’t been used much since the U.S. Open Tennis moved to a bigger space in Flushing Meadows, Queens, in the late 1970s.
