Do a 360 on Feedback

A tool that has been around for years but is just starting to be used by builders to facilitate honest, open feedback is 360-degree feedback.

A 360 feedback is an electronic or written survey that asks how others perceive an individual's strengths and developmental areas. The questions are usually about specific job competencies. The survey is given to three to five peers and subordinates as well as the individual's manager. The results are processed, and the individual is given a report that quantifies how his/her performance in important position competencies is viewed. The peer group's and subordinates' answers and comments are anonymous; the manager's are identified.

This tool allows for the beginning of honest, direct and helpful feedback that rarely occurs through normal one-on-one conversation.

Once the report is given to the individual, that person should work with someone (internally or externally) to construct a developmental plan to overcome weaknesses and capitalize on strengths. The person also should communicate to the survey participants the general feedback received and the plan for using it to improve.
