Super-Size the Shingles

Oversize Jumbo Royal Sovereign shingles from GAF Corp. install faster, save material and reduce labor time by up to 40%, the company says.

The shingle's extra-large 17x40-inch size means only 48 shingles per square are required compared with 80 standard English-size shingles per square. Fewer nails -- 192 versus 320 -- per square seal the installation savings.

Jumbo Royal Sovereign shingles also comply with the South Florida Building Code for Miami-Dade County. The fiberglass-reinforced, three-tab asphalt shingles are self-sealing.
