Path (The Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing) just came out with their list of top ten technologies for remodelers. Lighting modifications comprised three of the top ten technologies likely to make our homes “durable, stronger and more resource efficient”. Lighting is a big energy consumer in the home and therefore a big opportunity for increased efficiency.

PATH recommends compact fluorescent lighting, automatic switches, and tubular skylights.

Fluorescent lamps use about one-quarter the electricity of an incandescent lamp, making them a very efficient choice. Now they are available in warmer tones that resemble the incandescent light that we’re used to, making them an easy switch. Replacement costs are also lower since the fluorescent bulb life is much longer than that of incandescent bulbs.

Lighting controls allow you to dim the lights when not in use. Dimming decreases the energy used and lengthens the life of the bulbs. Daylight or motion sensors can vary the light output according to necessity, reducing excess use. They increase security as well by triggering automatically.

Tubular skylights add more light to a room while minimizing the energy loss caused by traditional skylights. From inside a room, tubular skylights often resemble a regular lighting fixture. Electrical lights can be added so they are usable both day and night.

LAMPS PLUS Professionals offers trade discounts with every order so if you want to experiment with these new technologies then check with us to see what’s in stock.
