1. Clarify the client's budget. Make sure you go over everything that needs to be covered. Lighting, accessories, rugs, pillows, wall art, any additional accent furniture, and organizational items all fall under this budget allowance. Make sure the client understands the average costs of the items covered.
2. Decide on a style and color scheme. You can ensure fulfilled expectations by clearly establishing the desired atmosphere before you start.
3. Choose an area rug; this will give you design direction, colors to work with, and definition for the space.
4. If additional accent furniture is necessary then this is the time to add that missing shelf or ottoman. You can usually dress up a space quite successfully by adding a few special pieces.
5. Pillows and lighting can have the biggest impact in terms of reinforcing a theme or style. Lighting is very expressive and distinctive styles can be found at every price point. Sofa and accent pillows immediately draw the eye so the color and patterns chosen set the tone for the room.
6. Add artwork for the walls. This is a great way to carry color around the room, making it both vivacious and harmonious. Texture can also be added with metal, ceramic and tapestry wall hangings if preferred.
7. Tabletop items like candles and accessories are last. These relatively inexpensive items can add plenty of personality and style. Sculptures, flowers, framed photos, and keepsake boxes warm up a space and make it look lived in.
At this point you should still be within your budget and have a room that delivers on style.

Jeff As certifed interior designers with ASID qualifications, we are a little concerned with your "decorating advice"! Why not just stick to what you know (lighting) and leave the design to the professionals.

Catchy title but I don''t get it, how is this different than if I wasn''t on a tight budget - where am I saving money?

We certainly do not want to step on anyone’s toes here, especially ASID qualified designers. As you may know, we have a decade’s long relationship with ASID, have attended and sponsored many local ASID events and we are a national ASID industry partner. West Coast ASID members are very closely affiliated with our stores and are some of our best customers. They are also part of the LAMPS PLUS team. In addition to my 18+ years in the lighting industry, certification by the American Lighting Association and onsite experience for almost two decades; I also consult with Certified Interior Designers on our staff, in addition to other experts, when researching tips or advice to offer readers of our blogs. Our readers include not only ASID, IIDA, IDS and NKBA professional members but also architects, electricians, contractors and builders. Many of the topics we cover have been requested by our customers. The economy and budgeting are very relevant subjects in today's world.
