Waiting for the Magic

I just saw a TV commercial with Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich sitting together discussing how we need to work together to solve our environmental problems.  The message is good, but one thing kind of bothered me.  Speaker Pelosi said “We need cleaner forms of energy and we need them fast”.  In itself, this isn’t a bad thing, but it reinforces a big problem we have in our country – an unwillingness to conserve.  While we sit around waiting for some magical, pollution free energy source, no one is doing much about reducing the amount of energy we use.

California, through careful conservation has managed to keep their per capita energy usage stable over the past 30 years while the rest of the country has increased by 50%.  Clearly it is possible to reduce energy use, alleviating the need for more power, if we only have the will to do it.  Instead, most of us are just sitting around waiting for that magical power source to show up and let us continue to consume more and more every day.

I think it’s time to wake up and make some changes in how we live.

How true. Unfortunately we are so far behind the curve on this one now that we will have a VERY rough ride over the next decade. A major bank just predicted that a barrel of crude will hit $225 by 2012. That affects everything we use on a daily basis - from cell phones to the tires on your car! Being green - or at least much more energy efficient is about to become a reality whether we are ready for it or not. Those who prepare now will at least have a bit of a head start on the rest of the crowd. My advice - be prepared for a serious adjustment in our standard of living, we are about to be weaned from the black gold tit.

You nailed it. The problem with energy is not the cost it is our consumption. The issues we face as a community are not what will happen in the next 50 years, it is what will happen in the next 500 years. Our impact on the world is the problem, and seriously how can we expect to not have an impact at 6 billion? Just take a look at a jobsite that after a few months of construction. The land is ripped to shreds. We need to start taking responsibility for our consumption and our future.
