Immigration Bill Unfair to Remodelers

If you have illegal immigrants working for subcontractors hired by you to work on one of your jobs, it appears that you'll be held accountable for their legal status. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce today decided not to back an amendment by Iowa Republican Charles Grassley and Democrats Max Baucus of Montana and Barack Obama of Illinois to the pending immigration bill. The amendment would have eliminated a requirement that employers verify the legal status of all workers on their job sites, even if those workers are not even their employees. The bill as it stands will essentially punish remodeling contractors for the shady hiring practices of their subs. The amendment would have placed the verification requirement where it belongs: on the company that hires the worker. As if it wasn't already difficult enough to find and hire quality subcontractors, this bill will make it even tougher. Is this fair? No way, in my opinion. What do you think about this? And what do you think about the immigration reform issue overall?
